As a supporter of Zero Hour, I am writing to ask that you help deliver real and lasting change for our climate and natural environment.
In January, your Government had the opportunity to support the Climate and Nature (CAN) Bill. This important legislation would have provided the UK with its first cohesive plan to address both the climate crisis and the collapse of nature at the same time.
The CAN Bill would not introduce new obligations. It would enshrine the UK’s existing international commitments in domestic law, ensuring we lead by example rather than saying one thing globally and doing another at home.
Your party’s manifesto rightly stated that the climate and nature crisis is the most serious long-term global threat. I share that belief. But it was disappointing to see the Government choose not to support the CAN Bill, despite its cross-party backing.
Following the second reading of the Bill, the Energy Secretary gave a clear commitment to deliver both its ‘spirit and its substance’. This has since been restated by other Ministers. Yet, six months have passed with no real progress, and the promised meeting with Zero Hour, the campaign behind the Bill, has still not happened.
If there is a real intention to act on this crisis, holding that meeting is a necessary starting point. On behalf of myself and many others, I ask that you write to Ed Miliband and urge him to ensure the meeting with Zero Hour takes place. Will you do this for me?
