I am writing to you as a supporter of Zero Hour, asking you to take meaningful steps to protect our climate and natural environment.
In January, your Government had the opportunity to support the Climate and Nature (CAN) Bill. This crucial piece of legislation would establish the UK’s first fully joined-up approach to tackling both the climate and nature crises.
The targets within the Bill are not new. They simply reflect the UK’s existing international commitments and would bring them into domestic law. This step is essential if we are to move away from a “do as I say, not as I do” approach and reclaim genuine leadership on the global stage.
Your party’s manifesto made it clear that the climate and nature crisis is the greatest long-term global challenge. I agree. But your Government chose not to back the cross-party CAN Bill.
After the Bill’s second reading, the Energy Secretary pledged to deliver both the ‘spirit and substance’ of the CAN Bill. Other Ministers echoed this commitment. But now, six months later, there has been no significant action, and the promised meeting with Zero Hour, the campaign behind the Bill, has still not taken place.
If your Government is serious about working together to create real change for climate and nature, that meeting is the essential first step.
On behalf of myself and many other concerned constituents, I ask you to write directly to the Energy Secretary, Ed Miliband, and ask him to make sure this meeting takes place. Will you be able to do this on my behalf?
I look forward to your response.
