I am writing to you as a supporter of Zero Hour, to ask for you to deliver meaningful change for climate and nature.
Back in January, your Government had the chance to back the Climate and Nature (CAN) Bill, a crucial piece of legislation that, if made law, would deliver the UK’s first fully joined-up plan to tackle the climate and nature crisis together.
The CAN Bill’s targets are not new. They would enshrine the UK’s commitments, already made on the world stage, into national legislation. This is vital if the UK is to end our “do as I say, not as I do” approach to international climate and nature diplomacy and truly reclaim our leadership status.
Your party's election manifesto could not have been clearer: the climate and nature crisis is the greatest long-term global challenge we face. I agree. Yet you and your Government chose not to support the cross-party CAN Bill.
Following its second reading in January, the Energy Secretary committed to delivering both the ‘spirit and substance’ of the Bill, a promise other ministers have reiterated in the months since. However, six months on, we have yet to see any concrete action, and the meeting that was promised with the ‘people behind the Bill’, Zero Hour, is yet to take place.
If there was a genuine commitment to work together and deliver a ‘real difference’ for climate and nature, then this meeting is a critical first step.
On behalf of me, and many other concerned constituents, will you write directly to the Energy Secretary, Ed Miliband, and urge him to ensure that this meeting takes place?
I look forward to hearing from you.
